Course Title: Hospice - Eligibility Election and Referrals
Course Series: eComply Healthcare

Description:

Hospice care is an interdisciplinary approach to caring for terminally ill individuals that provides palliative care that lessens the physical and mental effects of terminal illness rather than to provide treatment to cure the disease. The patient and family or household are considered a unit receiving care.

Hospice services may include, for example, nursing care, physician services, and home health aide services. Pain control, counseling, including bereavement counseling for the patient's family, and social services are required aspects of hospice care.

Hospice care is provided to patients in a wide variety of settings. Patients often receive hospice care in hospitals and nursing homes. In addition, patients receive various levels of hospice care services within their homes.

The purpose of this course is to assist hospice personnel in understanding three key compliance issues that may give rise to compliance violations:

1. When Medicare beneficiaries are eligible for hospice care

2. How Medicare beneficiaries must elect hospice care

3. What types of activities may violate the federal anti-kickback provisions
