This courses introduces you to an outpatient healthcare service provider known as a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP). PHPs provide intensive psychiatric treatment on an outpatient basis to patients who would otherwise require inpatient psychiatric care. PHPs are structured to serve a very specific patient population. Patients undergo treatment through a combination of clinically recognized services, such as group therapy and family counseling, among others. Each patient's treatment plan is specific to that individual.

The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of the following:

1. The Medicare standards for PHPs including what patients, treatments, and services are permissible and impermissible

2. The determination of reasonable and necessary services

3. The requirements for patient's treatment plans and progress notes

4. The requirements for physician supervision

5. The exception to physician supervision with respect to nurse practitioners, clinical psychologists, physician assistants, and clinical nurse specialists
