This course describes the methods by which Peer Review Organizations (PROs) monitor the Quality of Care provided to Medicare patients, and ensure Medicare Program Integrity, by examining the system and providers for efficiency and adherence to Medicare rules. PROs are private companies that contract with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to monitor and investigate patient care delivery and provider compliance.

This course is to clarifies PRO objectives and procedures for the providers who must understand how those objectives and procedures will affect them directly.

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

1. Describe the Quality of Care and Program Integrity functions of Peer Review Organizations

2. Distinguish among (a) possible concerns, (b) substantial violations in a substantial number of cases, and (c) gross and flagrant violations

3. Understand how cases and systems are evaluated, and provider/practitioner opportunities for discussion and action before the final decision about an alleged violation is made
